“Nutcracker” The Royal Ballet, 2008

舞台はクリスマスの夜。ドロッセルマイヤーは、主人公クララにくるみ割り人形をプレゼントします。この人形は、実は姿を変えられてしまった彼の甥っ子。クララの純粋な心の力を借りて、彼を元の姿に戻そうと託したのです。深夜になるとネズミの軍隊が現れ、おもちゃの兵隊たちと闘いを繰り広げます。くるみ割り人形たちは苦戦しますが、クララの助けで勝利を収めることができました。お礼に招待されたお菓子の国で、クララは金平糖の精や王子たちに歓待を受けるのでした。

On Christmas night, Herr Drosselmeyer presents a toy Nutcracker to the protagonist Clara. This toy Nutcracker is actually Drosselmeyer’s nephew, who has been transformed into a Nutcracker by a spell. Drosselmeyer placed his hope on pure-hearted Clara to break the spell and to revert his nephew to human.
When the clock strikes midnight, an army of mice appears, and is engaged in a battle with the band of toy soldiers. Nutcracker and the toy soldiers have a hard time in the battle with mice, but with the help of Clara, they gain a victory. Clara is invited to the Land of Sweets, where everyone, including the Dew Drop Fairies, dances and gives her tumultuous welcome.

めくるめく登場するチャイコフスキーの名旋律がもう最高です。お菓子の国で、チョコレートやお茶などさまざまなキャラクターたちが踊る第2幕は必見ですが、このピーター・ライト版では、第1幕もとても充実しています。中でも人形の世界に入ってゆくクララを、セットを拡げ、クリスマス・ツリーを巨大化させることで表現する演出は、なんともファンタスティックでファンタジーに溢れています。

Enjoy Tchaikovsky’s dazzling masterpiece. You can’t miss delightful Act II where various characters such as Chocolate and Tea dance, but in this Sir Peter Wright version, Act I is also full of entertainment. Especially, the scene where Clara enters into the world of toy is depicted by enlarging the set and with the Christmas tree that suddenly begins to grow to enormous size, which is fantastic and full of wonder.
